What To Expect During Your Initial Consultation

When choosing to undergo any type of procedure whether cosmetic or medical, it’s important to have a sit down consultation with your surgeon. You want to make sure you choose a surgeon who can meet your needs and expectations and one who can also put you at ease and make you feel comfortable.

One thing to note, it’s not uncommon to feel a little nervous or anxious before or during your initial consultation. This is normal. Properly preparing for your consultation will help settle your nerves and feelings of uneasiness.

We recommend that you come to your first consultation with a list of possible questions. It’s far better to get these questions out now rather than later down the line, or worse, the day of surgery. It is helpful to Dr. Schwartz if you can describe the physical traits that are a problem for you, so that he can better understand your concerns while examining you. Then, using his experience, artistic appreciation, and knowledge, Dr. Schwartz will discuss the best treatment options to help you reach your goals.

Before you can ask your questions, your surgeon will want to discuss a few things and ask general questions about your health and lifestyle.

Some questions your surgeon might ask are:

  • Why do you want a face lift?
  • What don’t you like about your face right now?
  • Do you have any pre-existing medical conditions?
  • Do you take any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements currently?
  • Do you smoke or use alcohol? If yes, how often?
  • Have you had any previous surgeries?
  • Do you exercise? How often?

After discussing some of these questions, your surgeon will evaluate your general health and assess your potential risk factors if there are any.

Next, your surgeon will examine and measure your face and note any symmetry issues. Your surgeon may also take photos.

After the physical examination is completed, your surgeon will discuss your options and his recommended course of treatment. During this time, you and your surgeon should discuss the realistic outcomes, risks or potential complications of undergoing a face lift. In addition, your surgeon will discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used. If you have any allergies to any types of medications, this is the time to bring these type of issues up.
