Preventing Complications When Getting Fillers

Dr. Anthony Youn, more popularly known as America’s Holistic Plastic Surgeon, says that “because there’s so much in the media, especially social media nowadays, [about] people getting fillers, there is this thought that maybe injectable fillers can’t really be messed up. That as long as you don’t overdo it, you’re gonna be fine.”

But according to the anti-aging expert, it really takes a skilled eye and a physician who is very knowledgeable in the anatomy of the face or the other parts of the body to perform the injection properly and safely.

“There are complications if the procedure is not done properly,” Dr. Youn warns.

He notes that the most feared complication typically occurs when the filler is accidentally injected into a blood vessel.  This mistake can cause scarring, tissue loss and even blindness. These are things that a lot of patients don’t know about.

Fortunately, there are ways that you can prevent complications from happening. He recommends three things to keep on mind:

  1. Choose a reputable board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, preferably a member of the Aesthetic Society.
  2. Choose a hyaluronic acid filler which has an antidote to it, called hyaluronidase, in case a complication happens.
  3. Make sure that the physician who treats you has a lot of experience in doing the procedure. It’s not something that you want a novice to be performing on you.
