As we start to get older, our skin begins to lose its firmness, or elasticity, and can often give the appearance of looking tired or worn. If you are troubled with your appearance due to visible wrinkles, sagging skin or deep creases on your face, you may want to consider undergoing a facelift. A rhytidectomy, or facelift, is a surgical procedure designed to correct visible signs of aging by tightening up loose skin on the face. In addition, a facelift can also combat excess fat below the chin that can appear as a double chin or what’s known as a turkey-gobbler neck.
If you have noticed some of these changes recently in your face, then you may be a good candidate for a rhytidectomy:
First, a facelift procedure begins with the use of a general or local anesthesia to numb the specific areas of the face and neck that will be worked on. Next, incisions are made along your hairline and ears and may extend around the scalp. Depending on the extent of the procedure, your surgeon might go in and remove any extra fat deposits and use a combination of techniques to tighten and firm any sagging skin by targeting the underlying muscle tissue. Finally, specialized sutures, or stitches, are placed under the skin to complete the facelift and reduce scarring. Generally speaking, scarring from a facelift is usually well concealed and minimal due to the use of incisions being made along the hairline.
When deciding to undergo any procedure, it’s important to gather all of the necessary facts about the procedure as well as any information about the surgeon who will be operating on you. Choosing the right surgeon can be just as important as choosing which procedure is right for you.
