Gummy Bear Boobs?

Have you heard of Gummy Bear boobs? With more than $1-Billion spent on cosmetic breast surgery a year in the United States it’s no surprise manufacturers keep coming out with the next best thing. Vanessa Bolano has the story.

Ask for gummy bears at a plastic surgeons office and you’ll get something else. The Gummy Bears are among the hottest trend in plastic surgery and while they feel somewhat like the sweet treat they sure don’t look like them.

“I think it’s just the image of a gel that doesn’t run. That you could cut a gummy bear in half and it wouldn’t run all over,” says board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Cynthia Mizgala.

The FDA just approved the implants in March. Metairie Dr. Cynthia Mizgala started using them in August as a third option for patients.

“The options are saline filled implants versus silicone filled implants. That’s the first question I usually ask my patients. If they are interested in the silicone option then I mention the one we have been using for 20 years, but I also bring up the new FDA approved Sientra implant which is popularly known as the Gummy Bear.”

The Gummy Bear implants come either smooth or textured, round or shaped. They’re the topic of discussion at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Conference in New Orleans. New York’s Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh says the shaped alternative has revolutionized reconstructive surgery results.

“What’s unique about these implants now is that for the first time you have a high strength silicone that allows it to be shaped. So now I can actually customize the anatomic shape of this implant to each individual woman,” says Dr. Alizadeh.

25-year-old Megan Zander has silicone implants, but working at Dr. Mizgala’s office she’s seen the results from the Gummy Bear implants first hand and is considering going under the knife again.

“I’ve seen incredible results. I have incredible results now , but I just like the new technology. The new cohesive gel of this implant versus the other silicone, and everybody wants the next product that’s going to last you longer and longer.”

The Gummy Bear or Sientra implant is not only designed to look and feel natural, but they’re leak resistant and tougher to rupture. They cost more than saline implants and about the same as the traditional silicone implant. At Dr. Mizgala’s office they’ll set you back $6,200.
