According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Americans have spent the largest amount on cosmetic surgery since the Great Recession of 2008. To be exact, Americans have spent over 11 million dollars on cosmetic procedures that are both surgical and non-surgical in nature. Furthermore, there was a 12% increase overall in cosmetic procedures.

Top Surgical Procedures of 2013

What may come as a surprise, liposuction has replaced breast augmentation as the most commonly performed surgical procedure and saw a 16% increase, or over a billion dollars spent nationwide.

Additionally, the following is a list of the Top 5 Surgical Procedures in 2013*:

  • Lipsocution (363,912 procedures, up 16.3%)
  • Breast Augmentation (313,327 procedures, down 5.2%)
  • Eyelid Surgery (161,389 procedures, up 5.4%)
  • Tummy Tuck (160,077 procedures, up 2.3%)
  • Nose Surgery (147,966 procedures, up 2.9%)

The experts are attributing the rise to things such as advances in technology, more and more procedures becoming less invasive, and greater accessibility to both surgical and non-surgical options. In addition, with the economy slowly starting to bounce back, people are once again investing in self-improvements.

Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures for Women

Women are still leading the way when it comes to undergoing cosmetic procedures and account for roughly 90.6%* or just over 10 million. Breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, breast lift and eyelid surgery are still the Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures that women choose.

With a 15% increase, injectables such as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin still remain the most frequently performed non-surgical procedures. Over 2.5 billion dollars were spent in non-surgical procedures in 2013 alone!
