BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast augmentation (enlargement) is the
second most frequently performed cosmetic surgery operation in the United
States, surpassed only by liposuction. It is performed to enhance
the size and shape of a woman’s breast. Typically, patients relate
a personal feeling of their breasts being too small and a
desire to fit into clothing better, to replace the volume lost after
pregnancy, or just to have a more attractive figure.
A breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia in less
than two hours and the initial recovery has been made much more
comfortable than in the past by the introduction of the On-Q Pain Buster
Pump®--a device that bathes the internal wound with long-acting anesthetic
for several days. This pump
greatly reduces post-operative pain.
Through a short incision either along the areolar border or in the fold
below the breast, the surgeon inserts a breast implant in a space created
either behind the breast gland or one layer deeper behind the pectoral
muscle. Dr. Schwartz uses
both saline and silicone implants and will thoroughly explain the pros and
cons of both implant types, as well as the indications for round or
anatomical shaped, low or high profile, smooth or textured surface
implants at your consultation.
Dr. Schwartz’ goal is to help you pick the most appropriate implant
that will give you the most attractive breast.
